092 | Berthoud Pass, Colorado

Today I went back to the old stomping grounds with Jeremy for a trip to the Second Creek area of Berthoud Pass. We were quickly joined with Tom and Jim along with Andy and Chris (who I skied Dry Gulch with just two weeks prior) and Kevin who you might remember as one of my roommates last year while spending the winter in Breckenridge.

We ascended close to 900 feet before dropping into some open terrain facing ESE. There we found about four inches of new snow on top of a funky layer that was most likely affected by the sun on Thursday. While we were pleased with the conditions here, we opted for north-facing terrain on our second lap.

Hopes of finding even softer snow and in larger quantities were immediately shot to pieces as we quickly discovered that the slope we intended to ski down was far too rocky and bare. Of course, we didn't realize this until it was too late and had to make the most of the situation. In the end, we did make it down safely, and we now know that at least three more feet of snow is needed to return back to this area.

Below is a video compilation from the day. Music by Teenage Fanclub & De La Soul: Fallin':
